Cover picture: Overlaid fluorescence microscopy and NanoSIMS 50 secondary ion images of inhomogeneities within a freeze-dried patterned supported lipid membrane. Fluorescence microscopy revealed a heterogeneous distribution of a Texas Red-labeled lipid (yellow) within the membrane, an artifact that can be avoided but is useful for demonstrating the capability of this method. An increase in the Texas Red-specific secondary ion signal from 32S (red) was detected at these highly fluorescent regions, demonstrating the ability to image and ultimately quantitate the composition of microdomains with the NanoSIMS 50.
