Neurons are specifically immunolabeled for βIII-tubulin and astrocytes for glial fibrillary acidic protein (green). Altering the matrix stiffness to values above and below physiological levels compared to the stiffness of intact brain tissue shifts the resulting cell populations on the gel surface. Neurons attach well and show a bias for growth on soft materials. Astrocytes, on the other hand, weakly attach to soft gels while spreading and adhering strongly to hard materials.
